The Creator of Ham
I started writing stories a few years ago. Instead of
sending them off to publishers and left at their discretion, I decided to create
my own fate. I created my own website to publish my stories.
This way I am in complete control of all aspects of the writing process. I
figure if I can't market myself, then I'm in trouble. So far, so good.
I picked the name "Ham" for two reasons. Partly because it
is a cool and catchy sounding name and partly because it's the name of my favourite
fictional character from my favourite book.
Ham Peggotty, from the book David Copperfield
(written by Charles Dickens), has his fiancée (Little Emily) stolen from him by
Copperfield's good friend, Steerforth. Little Emily and Steerforth leave for
mainland Europe while Ham stays in his little coastal shipping village. One day,
while Copperfield is visiting the little village, a fierce storm bursts onto the tiny hamlet.
The villagers are on the beach watching their family ships return safely to them.
One ship, not belonging to anyone in the village is still trying to make it
ashore. With each thunderous wave, a crew member disappears from the ship, to his
death. After 4 or 5 waves there is only one man left on the ship. Ham, against
the advise of the entire village, ties a rope around his chest with the villagers holding
onto the other end enters the sea. He could not bear to watch a man die.
He slowly makes his way past 2 or 3 waves before he, himself, disappears. The rope
washes ashore with no one tied to the other end. Shortly after, Ham's lifeless body
washes on shore. The villagers rush him inside the closest house and put him
on a table. Another body, the body of the man Ham tried to save, washes onto the
beach. It is the body of Steerforth. Ham had sacrificed his life for the man
who took the most precious part of his life (Little Emily) away from him.
All the drawing on this website were created by me in
Paint. Photos with my character in the foreground were mostly photos taken
by me. Using Photoshop (and my mom's help) I am able to cut the Paint
characters and paste them into my photos.
